Avenue Q

16 May - 25 May 2019

AVENUE Q is a highly topical, laugh-out-loud musical that is part flesh, part felt and packed with heart.

Inspired by Sesame Street (but not for kids) Avenue Q is filled with gut-busting humour and delightfully catchy songs as it tackles sensitive themes such as racism, homosexuality and diversity. It’s reflective of the difficult, R-rated realities that we face when we learn that real life isn’t as simple as we dreamed it might be – but perhaps, suggests Avenue Q, life is all the more colourful and worthwhile for it.

Since beating Wicked for the three major Tony Awards in 2004 (Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book) Avenue Q has gone on to be one of the longest running shows on Broadway, and a huge hit on London’s West End. In 2018 its co-creator Robert Lopez became the first person ever to win all four major awards twice – Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. His other credits include The Book of Mormon and the songs featuring in Disney’s Frozen.

Avenue Q is not the most upmarket of New York streets and is about as far away from Park Avenue as you can get, but it is home to some lively and off the wall characters performed by an unholy comedic alliance of humans and puppets!

Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, has just moved to this neighbourhood as he desperately tries to follow his dreams and discover his ever-elusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the distraction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead Princeton on a hilarious story of self-discovery. Life may suck on Avenue Q but being jobless, homeless, politically incorrect, and having sex are just some of the topics featured in this terrific show.
